Universal Ranking System
Listed below is the universal ranking system that is used in Poker!
Royal Flush – Five cards in the same suit from Ace to Ten
For example: A, K, Q, J, T of clubs
This is the highest possible hand you can get and if you are dealt this then you are extremely lucky and will probably win millions if you are playing in a world championship! Two or more royal flushes means the money is divided! Suits do not matter. The sad fact is that the probability of you getting this hand is 650,000-1!
Straight Flush – Five consecutive cards of the same suit
For example: 6,7,8,9,10 of diamonds
The highest card in the order determines who the winner is. For instance, a straight flush of 6,7,8,9,10 beats a straight flush of 2,3,4,5,6. again suits do not matter. The probability of you getting this hand is 72,200-1!
Four of a Kind (Quads) – Four cards of the same rank plus another card
For example: 6 of hearts, 6 of diamonds, 6 of clubs, 6 of spades and K of diamonds
The highest rank wins for instance, 3-3-3-3-K will beat 2-2-2-2-A. The probability of you getting this hand is 4,200-1!
Full House – Three cards of the same rank and a pair of the same rank
For example: 8 of clubs, 8 of diamonds, 8 of spades, 10 of spades, 10 of clubs
A Full House can also be known as a Boat or Full Boat. The highest ranking three of a kind determines the winner, thus a hand made up of Q-Q-Q-7-7/Queens full of Sevens would beat a hand of 7-7-7-Q-Q/Sevens full of Queens. The probability of you receiving this hand is 700-1.
Flush – Five cards of the same suit
For example: 3, 9, 8, 7, 6 of hearts
The highest ranking single card wins. Therefore, K-4-6-7-8 would beat a Q-4-6-7-8. If the top cards are the same then the next highest card wins. Any Flush that includes an Ace is known as a Nut Flush which is the best possible flush. The probability of you getting this hand is 510-1.
Straight – A sequence of five cards of differing suits
For example: J of diamond, T of hearts, 9 of clubs, 8 of spades, 7 of diamond
The highest card in order determines the winner, thus a J-T-9-8-7 beats T-9-8-7-6. Remember that an ace can be either high or low. The probability of you getting this hand is 250-1.
Three of a Kind – Three cards of the same ranking plus two other cards
For example: 9 of clubs, 9 of hearts, 9 of spades, A of hearts, K of spades
The higher ranking Three of a Kind wins, for instance 9-9-9-A-K beats 8-8-8-A-K. The probability of getting this hand is 48-1.
Two pair – Two cards of the same rank, plus two cards of another same rank, plus another card
For example: A of hearts, A of spades, 9 of diamonds, 9 of hearts, 5 of hearts
The highest pair wins. For instance, A-A-T-T-8 beats A-A-8-8-4. If the cards are tied then the second pair determines the winner and if they are tied then the single card determines the winner. The probability of you getting this hand is 21-1.
One Pair – Two cards of the same rank plus three other cards
For example: J of hearts, J of diamonds, 8 of hearts, 4 of spades, 2 of clubs
The highest pair wins and if it id tied then the highest ranking other card wins. The probability of you getting this hand is 5-2.
High Card – Five cards of different ranks
For example: A of hearts, J of spades, 6 of clubs, 3 of diamonds, 2 of hearts
The highest card wins and if there is a tie then the next highest card wins and so on. The probability of you getting this hand is Evens.
Although, it may seem like there is a lot to learn it does get easier through practice. However, you do need to know the ranking system inside out before you play at a casino because you do not want to keep looking at a piece of paper!
