The Basics of Poker
There are numerous types of poker games including Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Five card Draw, Seven-card Stud, Razz or Omaha Eight or Better. Although there are many different ways to play poker there are some basic rules that apply to all of them. Thus, you will be able to utilize these basic rules in any game you take part in.
The basic rules associated with Poker are listed below:
- Poker is played with a standard deck of 52 cards
- Suits are of equal value in Poker
- A minimum of 2 players is required
- A maximum of 10 players are allowed
- Poker is “One player, One hand” it is not a team game or sport, each player plays his own hand
- Poker requires cash or chips
- You should never show your hand to another player even if after other players have folded, this may appear to violate the “one player, one hand rule”
- A Poker game always comes down to one thing – the best 5 card hand wins the amount staked by all the players
- All poker games abide by a universal ranking system. Cards are ranked from highest to lowest: A,K,Q,J,T,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2. However, Aces are uniques because they can be the highest card and also the lowest card e.g. A-2-3-4-5.
