Texas Hold'em

Texas Hold'em or Hold'em is the most popular type of Poker and it is extremely easy to learn. Each stage of the Hold'em game will be identified and explained fully so that you can understand how the game works.

  • Firstly, you have to start with selecting a dealer. You normally do this by drawing for a high card which means whoever gets the highest card is the dealer. Or you may already have a dealer chosen. The deal moves one place clockwise after each hand and the dealer button is placed in front of the nominated player to help keep track of who is dealing. This is also known as “being on the button.”
  • Before the cards are dealt, the two players to the left of the dealer have to place forced bids known as the “small and big blinds”. By doing this it means that there is always something to play for. The big blind is always the double of the small blind.
  • The dealer then gives each player a card faced down starting from his left, until each player has two cards. The dealer is last to get their cards.
  • When every player has their cards it is then time for the first round of betting. The betting starts with the first person to the left of the big blind who must either match the amount of the big blind, raise the bet or fold.
  • This continues around the table until all the players have matched the largest bet or folded. If there are no raises then the big blind has the option of raising or checking, which means making no bet.
  • After this comes the most important part in a game of Hold'em which is the Flop!
  • First of all the dealer “burns” a single card face down before the Flop so that cheating can be prevented. If a cheat marks the deck then they will know the identity of each card before each round of betting.
  • Then the dealer places three cards face up in the middle of the table, this is the Flop and these can now be used by all players at the table to make there five card poker hand.
  • After this flop comes another round of betting. After the betting is over the dealer burns another card face down and then deals the fourth community card face up, this is known as the “Turn” card.
  • Then there is another round of betting, then another burn card and then the final community card which is called the “River” card.
  • At this stage everyone that is still in the game has got two hole cards and five community cards to make up their best five card hand.
  • You can make your best five card hand with one of your hole cards, both of your hole cards or even none of them, which means you just use the cards on the board. This is known as playing the board.
  • Now that all cards are in play the final round of betting commences and if more than one player is still in the game then all the cards are revealed. This is called the showdown.
  • The winner is then declared in accordance with the hand ranking system.
