Poker

Poker is a hugely popular game and is known as the world's biggest game! It is believed that four million people play it in the UK alone and over two hundred million people play it worldwide. It is also been stated that in America it is the second most popular after dark activity!

Although many Americans believe that they made Poker it actually originated in the 16th century in Paris! It was known as As Nas which inly used a 20 or 25 card deck, with either four or five players and contained five different suits or subjects. The game then made its way through Germany where it was known as Pochen and then France where it was known as Poque! Eventually landing in America through the French Colonies via Canada and New Orleans at the start of the 18th Century. It then spread through the whole of America and ultimately made its name in Las Vegas. In 1970 it grew in stature once again as Benny Binion who was the owner of the Horseshoe Casino, introduced the World Series of Poker (WSOP). The tournament works by players paying a fixed entry fee, receiving the same number of chips as everyone else playing and then just playing the game until you go bust or declared as a winner!

Today, the game of poker has grown so dramatically that you can now play it online where you do not even have to step into a casino you can just play it 24/7 from the comfort of your own home! On the Internet you do not even need to play with real money, certain websites offer you the opportunity to play with fake money which makes it even more enjoyable.

Televised Poker games have also been introduced in the UK which enables the viewer to see all the players cards and moves through a glass topped table. This brought a huge amount of attention to the game of Poker and now Poker games are selling out in supermarkets and high street chains across the world.

Another aspect of Poker which makes it hugely popular is that fact that anyone can play against anyone! It is one of the few sports that allows you to play against professional players and still win unlike teeing off with Tiger Woods for instance where you would not stand a chance!

In 2005 the winner of the World Series of Poker was a chiropractor from Australia, namely, Joe Hachem who won $7.5 million!

Therefore, Poker seems to be an easy to learn sport or activity that anyone can play and enjoy!
